Alna SmitAlna Smit

Alna finished school in Vereeniging, South Africa in 1985 and obtained a BMus degree and HED from the PU for CHE (currently the Northwest University) in 1990. She sang in the University Choir conducted by Awie van Wyk and still as a student, she started a singing ensemble who ended up as finalists in the well-known ATKV Crescendo light music competition. From 1991 to 1996 she taught music at different schools. During this time she was part of a teacher theatre group from Hoërskool Die Wilgers in 1992/93 that participated in the ATKV drama competition and reached the finals. She also formed part of the Cabaret 'Reisplan' which made a debut at Aardklop 2001, and released a CD in March 2002.

In 1996, she founded her own business 'MusicaNova' which specialises in music printing and arrangements for choirs, singing groups and instrumental ensembles. Choirs and groups throughout South Africa and internationally use these works in concerts and competitions. From 2009 MusicaNova also started recording professionally as a new line of business, and since then did several recording projects for school productions, an educational project for CAMI (Computer aided maths instruction), and a classical recording for violin and piano, and a children CD which is to be released soon. MusicaNova is currently involved in the music preparation for the movie musical 'Line out'.

In 2001 she did all the transcriptions and printing for a project by AMCT (Africa Music and Choral Trust) when a choral album of indigenous African choral music was published.

From 2002-2007 she had her own music studio in Nelspruit and taught singing, violin, piano and theory of music. Over these years she founded and conducted several choirs and singing groups and was also part of a classical string trio that performed in and around Nelspruit.

Since 2005 she was appointed as the musical director for several school productions throughout the country, responsible for the music arrangements, vocal coaching and recording of the production CD's.

Since 1991 to 2015 she was a member of the Johannesburg based Chanticleer chamber choir. She joined this group on several tours national and international, and made recordings for the SABC as well as CD recordings. She performed as soloist with the group on a regular basis. She is a regular soloist for the Pretoria Bach Choir.

She is musical director and organist at her congregation, and manages the band that leads them in praise and worship.

She performed as a backing singer with Helmut Lotti during three of his South African tours.

She adjudicates choirs, vocal work and instrumental music on a regular basis at Eisteddfods and arts festivals throughout the country.

She is a full-time teacher at Afrikaans Meisie Hoër Pretoria since 2014.

Annica Smit obtained her diploma in Musical Theatre at the Tshwane University of Technology. While studying, she had the privilege to be part of excellent musicals such as; Ragtime and I Love you, You're Perfect, Now Change and she portrayed the infamous Sara Jane Moore in Assassins. One of the highlights while studying was her portrayal of Frau Bergman in Spring Awakening.

She appeared in the KykNET soapie, Binnelanders, as the shy and timid Marli. She was part of the ensemble for the second run of the musical Ester (ADD-life productions). She was also in the Hartiwood movie musical, Pretville, as the wallflower, Bettie. In the children's television programme Jakkals Jol (on SABC 2), Annica was the voice artist and puppeteer for the character Rooikappie. In 2014, she played the whimsical nurse, Florence, in the Afrikaans musical Reik Na Die Sterre (Smash Hit Company).

Apart from performing, Annica is a songwriter. Her song, Sprokiesverhaal was released in April, 2014. This song was selected for the KykNET MVP's and the music video is currently airing on KykNET channels. Three of her original compositions were featured in Hoërskool Randburg’s annual production, Romeo and Juliet.

In the beginning of 2015, Annica and her composer friend won the #Scars competition for best song. The song; Unstoppable (Music & Lyrics by Stephan van der Walt & Annica Smit); will be featured in the teenage adventure film, #Scars (FADcreations).

She has been production assistant for the KykNET Silwerskerm fees' short film; Prinses as well as the music video, Taal van Kos by Ruzelle Blackie.

She made her debut as musical director for Hoërskool Randburg’s Romeo and Juliet at the beginning of 2015. Annica is currently working for MusicaNova on a part time basis and is involved in several school productions as assistant musical director. These schools include; Cornwall Hill College (Hairspray), Affies Meisies en Affies Seuns Pretoria (Beauty and the Beast), Hoërskool Nelspruit (Annual Production).
